Build Your DJ Brand Part 4: Social Media

by

If you’ve been following the BPM Supreme blog over the past few weeks, we’re identifying some essential branding elements that every DJ should have in place. So far we’ve covered a basic overviewlogospress photos andbios. In this article, we’ll jump into the ever-changing world of social media.

For DJs today, having a strong social media presence is a necessity. The goal is to provide value and usefulness to followers and industry professionals through your profiles and pages. Whether you’re just getting started or want to improve the pages you already have, you can increase likes and shares by creating posts that are fun, informative and spark conversation.

Focus on Your Favorite
With plenty of social media platforms at our fingertips, there’s a great opportunity for DJs to showcase how they’re unique and why they’re worth listening to. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat can make a significant impact on your career if used to their full potential. Experiment with each one and pick one or two that work the best for you to communicate to your audience. Your focus can be to grow one platform and maintain a few others if that works for you. Set a personal goal for yourself and aim to reach a certain amount of followers within a specific timeframe. This is an easy way to track your progress and keep the momentum going.

Create Engaging Content
Deciding what to post and creating valuable content can be hard. Start by making folders that you can reach into whenever you get stuck for something timely. This can include videos from your past performances, photos from behind the scenes at events, or even mixes and tracks you like from other DJs. Also keep your posts current and fresh with original mixes and tracks, or promote gigs that you’ll be playing in the near future. Check out the rule of thirds from Digital DJ Tips. With this combination of promoting, sharing and engaging, you’ll be creating meaningful and entertaining content in no time.

Maintain and Post Regularly
Maintaining and posting regularly is the easiest way to build a consistent (and growing) social media following. You want to create a schedule that is realistic and that you’ll stick with. Posting a least once a day is ideal, and knowing when to post is also important. Try experimenting with different types of content and post at different times of the day. This will show you when your audience is the most accessible and what types of content are the most engaging. Once you find a routine that works for you, a social media plan will fall into place.

There are also options to automate your social posts – meaning you can create a bunch of posts at once and schedule them over a few days or a week. Some examples of these resources are Hootsuite, Buffer and Hubspot. Added plus: these tools can also help you to monitor your accounts and track growth.

Share Social Numbers
You probably know by now that social media numbers equal more bookings and money in the bank. Many bookers look at social media numbers these days, so your hard work is sure to pay off. Once you feel your social media pages have a substantial following or are moving in the right direction, share those statistics within your bio, mention them through pitch emails and include them in your press kit. (Just remember to keep the stats up-to-date!) A few bullet points with your social media numbers will show potential clients that you take your brand seriously and that you will passionately promote the events you play.

Social media may seem like a full-time job, but by dedicating as little as an hour a day, you could see substantial growth. Next week we’ll take a look at the press kit and how to easily tie together your branding in a clean and inviting package. In the meantime, let us know if you have any tips or tricks to take DJ branding to the next level. We want to hear from you!
